Black Heaven

8¾” diameter (tip-to-tip) raw-edge Spalted Tree of Heaven bowl

The black colour applied to the rim of this raw-edge bowl accentuates the feathery dark markings left within the wood by a process called “spalting” (where a fungus moves through the wood fibers and consumes the sugars found there). Grooves around the base add subtle elegance to this organic form.

Tree of Heaven  is named for the great heights the tree can reach. It was once viewed as an honoured ornamental tree in China; now, it’s quick growth and hardiness have proved to be overwhelming for many ecosystems, and it is widely viewed as an invasive species.
